University of Iowa's Alpha Delta Phi suspended for 4 years after hazing dozens of pledges

A University of Iowa fraternity accused of hazing dozens of youthful men by throwing food on them has been suspended for four years.

The Alpha Delta Phi fraternity was placed on interim suspension in November after police were called to the fraternity house for a fire alarm and discovered 56 pledges blindfolded, shirtless, and with "food thrown on them."

University of Iowa fraternity violated 'accountability procedures'

The university investigated the incident and suspended the fraternity until at least July 1, 2029. The academy lists three violations on its accountability website for hazing, misconduct on organizational property and mistake to comply.

Alpha Delta Phi was one of four fraternities and sororities under investigation for violating UI policies. The UI chapter was only established in 2023, according to their social media.

Name released in UI fraternity hazing investigation

A name has been released in the investigation into the University of Iowa fraternity chapter Alpha Delta Phi for potential hazing. Joseph Gaya, 21, was arrested on Nov. 15 after police discovered several dozen Alpha Delta Phi pledges in the fraternity’s basement.

According to the criminal complaint, police discovered 56 blindfolded fraternity pledges with diet thrown on them. Gaya allegedly stood in front of officers, blocking the doorway leading to the room entire of pledges, and refused to go despite multiple requests from law enforcement.

Police had responded to the fraternity home the morning of Nov. 15 in response to a fire alarm. The UI Police Department, Iowa City police, and the Iowa City Fire Department all responded to the scene, according to a remark released on Nov. 15 by the UI.

UI denied Alpha Delta Phi appeal as 2 members take 'sole responsibility' for alleged hazing

The Alpha Delta Phi fraternity is still on interim suspension for an alleged hazing incident despite an appeal and an internal, third-party investigation that pointed blame at a pair of members.

The national Alpha Delta Phi office concluded, through the results of the investigation, that the two brothers bear "sole responsibility," according to the fraternity's appeal of the Nov. 15 incident. Police responded to an early morning energy alarm at the frat residence and allegedly discovered 56 pledges blindfolded, with food thrown on them, according to a criminal complaint.

"Through personal statements of admission, the final report states that these two individuals came up with the event, carried it out, and acted outside the directives of chapter leadership and the official plan for our initiation events," Alpha Delta Phi wrote in the chapter's appeal. "Their actions are both disappointing and harmful to the chapter."

The brothers had their membership revoked sometime between the incident and Dec. 4., when the fraternity filed its appeal with the University of Iowa Office of Student Acc
