MPF Conservation

The Berkey and Gay collection was conserved by MPF Conservation 2012-2013. It was part of the original collection bought by Henry Hahn for the Henry Hahn House.

Berkey and Gay (or Berkey & Gay) was founded by brothers William and Julius Berkey, and George Gay in Grand Rapids, MI, long considered to be a center for furniture performance. Cabinet maker John Frohberg is credited with many of the carving designs. The scalloped blueprint shown on these pieces was a trademark of their company.

It is significant to emphasize that MPFC was not tasked with refinishing the Berkey and Gay pieces, but preserving the imaginative finish. On all pieces, the accomplish was treated using our own in-house shellac mixed with no additives. As infill it equivalent the historic finish; after it was waxed and rubbed to a friendly patina.

Berkey & Gay Renaissance 1925 Dining Set, Table & 6 Chairs

Signed by eminent maker, "Berkey & Gay," this 1925 era dining set includes a table with three leaves and six chairs, all in the Renaissance manner.

The finish is in excellent condition on walnut wood with subtle shading. All frames are compact and strong. Deeply carved details are beautiful. Two leaves have carved aprons or skirts, one does not, and all are original.

Table size is 42" wide, 30" tall, legroom is 25 1/2" underneath, length when closed is 66" drawn-out , with all three leaves in place, length is 93" overall.

Huge and comfortable chairs are newly upholstered. Two armchairs are 30" wide, 25" deep, 40" tall and seats are 19" steep, four side chairs are 21" wide, 22" dense and 38" tall.

Berkey and Gay Banded Dining Table :: NVIN0275

From Niagara Furniture, a vintage Berkey and Gay Banded Dining Table in overall excellent condition. The top has some minor surface scratching which can be seen in the ultimate photo of this listing. These scratches can be polished out for an additional fee.

This pretty Berkey and Gay Banded Dining Table has everything one could ask for as a focal point for the dining room. The dining table has a large top comprising of dazzling walnut and surrounded with a banding of burled walnut. The beautifully shaped and carved outside corner legs are further supported by another pair of legs in the center of the table so that when all five table leaves are inserted the table remains sturdy. Two of the table leaves possess aprons and three of them do not have aprons. The table features American made wooden table rails for easy opening and closing and the table retains its’ original lock which holds the two halves of the top firmly in place when used without the table leaves.
