Coming out can be one of the most significant parts of an Queer person's life, with countless films and shows trying to capture the impact of these moments through a variety of distinct storytelling techniques. From stunning moments of acceptance to traumatizing scenes of dread, it's been amazing to see so many other representations of this monumental step, though it's unfortunate how many creators hug these cinematic versions of coming out rather than the grounded, thoroughly confusing experiences they typically are. That is why Am I OK?, directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, is such a necessity.

We’ve all asked this question about ourselves at one direct or another: Am I OK? Adequately, Dakota Johnson has to come to grips with some hard truths about herself in the new friendship dramedy, in which her character figures out that she’s a lesbian.

Johnson stars as Lucy, a 30s-something woman who discovers she’s a queer woman just as her best friend Jane is moving away from Los Angeles to London for work. Not having her emotional anchor and lifeline is going to produce dating in the gay scene a bit tough.

The movie stars Sonoya Mizuno as Jane, along with, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, Sean Hayes, and Tig Notaro. Notaro co-directed the film with her wife and comedian Stephanie Allynne. The script by Lauren Pomerantz is semi-autobiographical in nature.

This should be an simple rebound for Johnson from the disastrous Madame Web. She’s too good of an actress to be down for too long, and this is more in her wheelhouse than superhero movies ever will be. I saw the film when it premiered two years ago at Sundance and found it a bit slight, but Pomerantz’s deeply personal screenplay holds up.

However, Twitter is currently abuzz over these recently tweeted excerpts from a resurfaced interview Johnson did with Vogue in 2017. On a recent breakup, Johnson explained, “Shit happens. I think I’m a little bit heartbroken all the age, even when I’m in a glad relationship. I don’t do casual very well, and my feelings, even the good ones, fetch so intense that they hurt. Can we make things really juicy? Can we say that I’m taking this time to scout my bisexuality? Or that I include given myself to the Lord obeying the release of my sexually explicit trifecta of films?” While on the one hand it could be interpreted that Dakota Johnson is announcing her bisexuality, she mostly appears to be making a joke.

She also told Vogue, “I’ve been in a phase of my life where I’m fascinated by young women coming to terms with their sexua

Lauren Pomerantz had a secret.

Roughly 12 years ago, the TV writer was struggling with how to tell her closest friends that she’s gay. She was frequently anxious and irritated, and "we were getting into fights,” recalls Pomerantz, now 44. “I remember I kept saying, ‘I just feel so weird!’ And they were like, ‘What does that even mean?’ I didn’t want to lose those friendships, but I just didn’t know what to do.”

Finally, after a long, teary car sit on spent listening to Coldplay, she broke the news when they met up in Palm Springs, California. “They still make entertainment of me because I was just sobbing, like, ‘I reflect I might like girls!’ ” she says with a chuckle. "They were like, ‘Oh, express gratitude God, finally.’ It was a relief for all of us.”
