Kit Hung Shifts His Focus To New Haven

For filmmaker Kit Hung, coming out as a gay man to his family felt like a kind of confession.
Hung hails from Hong Kong, where same-sex marriage is not legally recognized. For decades, he has been propelled by LGBTQ+ movements around the world to build his own queerness more visible, even though he wasn’t immediately accepted for his sexuality. That matching desire to increase gender non-conforming visibility is what drove his latest project, Forever 17, and what is driving his new perform in New Haven this year.
Forever 17,which was screened at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art in New Haven earlier this year, is a compact film that follows the life of a lgbtq+ couple in Hong Kong who get married and grow old together. This spring and summer, Hung’s work will continue in New Haven through his time as a Yale-China Fellow, through which he is associated with both the Yale-China Association and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.

As a Chinese immigrant, I identify a great deal with Afong, the main character of THE CHINESE LADY by Lloyd Suh. The play touches on so many of the equal issues I experienced as a young man. I arrived in the US when I was just turning 16 — my naïveté and my enthusiasm for coming to live in this new country that I had heard about so much in my childhood. Like Afong, I would truly find myself only after a long gestation period and then awakened to the political reality of being a gay Asian man living in America: my body, my glance, and my sex are constantly subjected to the ever-present “gaze,” which also took on diverse “flavors” as I moved across the country from the East Coast to Middle America to the end of the Oregon Trail. I could be considered a member of the model minority in one instant, and dismissed as a bad Asian driver in the next; or I could be assumed to be quiet and submissive, or considered effeminate, not because I am gay, but because I am an Asian man.
