WASHINGTON, D.C. — As extremist lawmakers in state houses across the country continue advancing a record-breaking number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state legislatures, the Human Rights Campaign — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, non-binary and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — is providing the below snapshot (updated weekly) to illustrate the hostile legislative climate facing LGBTQ+ people, and the scale and scope with which the carried on legislative assault is organism waged.
This weaponization of general policy has been driven by extremist groups that have a long history in working to oppress the existence and rights of LGBTQ+ people. Several of these organizations contain been deemed hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, such as the Alliance Defending Independence and the Family Investigate Council.

LGBTQ
Acronym for lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual, transgender, and queer. The Q generally stands for queer when LGBTQ organizations, leaders, and media use the acronym. In settings offering support for youth, it can also stand for questioning. LGBT and LGBTQ+ are also used, with the + added in recognition of all non-straight, non-cisgender identities. What Do You Say to ‘That’s So Gay’ & Other Anti-LGBTQ+ Comments?
It doesn’t matter if it is a first grader who might not know what the word “gay” means, a sixth grader trying to sound cool or a tenth grader “teasing” a friend. All of these scenarios have the potential of creating an unsafe classroom or school environment and must be addressed. So, what can caring adults do?

- “Remember, we don’t use put-downs in this class.”
- “Do you know what ‘gay’ means?"
- “It’s not OK at this school to exploit ‘gay’ disrespectfully to mean something is bad.”
- “You may not have meant to be hurtful, but when you exploit the word ‘gay’ to mean something is bad or stupid, it is hurtful.” Follow-up with, “Do you grasp why it is hurtful?”

Gay. It’s a misstep many gay people are familiar with, even from our most well-meaning friends. You’ll love him—he’s gay! (As a general rule, hearing this predisposes me not to like the homosexual in doubt, if only to prove a point.) It’s the sort of comment that would be deeply offensive if it weren’t so naive.
“You think all gays are the same,” Max counters. “You think just ’cause Franklin and I are both friends of Elton, we’re just gonna pack it up, move to Vermont, and start selling antiques?”
“No, I did not say that.”
