Jeremy Pope says being gay charge him a major film role

In a recent interview, out star Jeremy Pope discussed losing a role because of his sexuality.

Pope, 30, earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in The Inspection. The feature is based on writer and director Elegance Bratton's real-life experiences facing homophobia at home and in the Marines.

Pope is also recognizable for playing a gay screenwriter in Netflix's Hollywood.

Speaking with Variety ahead of Tuesday's Golden Globe ceremony, Pope said that he was three days from beginning shooting on a major film when the director let him move because he's gay.

"The short version is: I'd been given an opportunity to lead a studio film. And even though I didn't love the script, it meant something," he said. "But it was one of those things that would receive me in the conversations, get me in front of directors and people at studios. As people know, that is currency and helps where the comma on your check goes and the opportunities you're given."

The actor and singer was born on July 9, 1992 in Orlando, Florida, and he is 31 years old as of this writing. Prior to debuting in Hollywood, Pope is a successful Broadway actor, and he received Tony Award nominations in 2019. 

His nominations were for Foremost Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Pharus Jonathan Young in Choir Boy, as well as Best Featured Player in a Musical for playing the role of Eddie Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.

In Tony Award history, Pope is the sixth person to earn nominations in two categories for separate performances in the same year. Aside from thriving in Broadway, he is also famously known for starring as Archie Coleman in the Netflix series ‘Hollywood,’ which happens to be his first role in a TV show.

Moreover, the 2022 drama film ‘The Inspection’ was his first lead role, and it earned him nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards and Golden Globes.

Director and scriptwriter Elegance Bratton based the story on his retain life.

Jeremy Pope, who plays Ellis French in the production, is open about calling on his own experiences growing up as a Black, queer dude for the role. He says, “I wish there had been a film like this when I was a child, with a story where someone who like me approached life directly and powerfully.”
